After the pouring of the last batch of concrete, there is celebration at the world’s largest hydro-electricity project.
China has now completed construction on the controversial Three Gorges Dam.Work began in 1997 and power is expected to be generated from 2009.
The 20 billion euro project has been criticised for its environmental impact and its affect on surrounding communities.
The official China Daily has called on people to remember the more than 100 people who died during the dam’s construction, as well as the 1.3 million people who have had to be relocated to make way for the dam’s reservoir.
Authorities say the dam will prevent flooding along the Yangtze River and provide 18 gigawatts of power.
