The world’s most famous film festival has opened with the traditional gala premiere. Jury members have some 20 films in competition to sit through in the coming days. The contest for the coveted Palme d’Or promises to be as fierce as ever – a tough call for jury chief Wong Kar Wai.
And as ever, the festival has been courting controversy – opening this year with the world premiere of the Da Vinci Code – the film based on the bestseller by American writer Dan Brown. The film’s all-star cast has spent much of its time so far defending the work, which has already been panned by critics. The source novel’s theories on the life of Jesus Christ have raised the hackles of religious groups, and the film looks set to do the same.
