The Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts has gone to the Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodovar. The Oscar winner beat off 43 other entries to win the prestigious prize which was announced in Oviedo in Spain today.
The jury praised the universal appeal of his films which through original language shed light on the complexities of the human condition. Almodovar received the prize for his body of work rooted in Spanish society.Pedro Almodovar was part of the artistic movement which swept across Spain in the early 80s called “La movida”.
He has continued to make waves, his latest offering “Volver” is about a mother returning from the grave to aid her daughters and grand-daughter.
It stars Carmen Maura and Penelope Cruz who recently revealed she became an actress so that she could work with Almodovar.
