Belgian man kills two in suspected racist attack

In what is believed to have been a racially motivated incident, an 18-year-old Belgian has shot and killed two people and injured another in the port city of Antwerp.

Police say the man, who was himself shot in the stomach by armed police, has far-right sympathies. His shooting rampage left a black woman and white girl dead and a Turkish woman injured. Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt described it as a horrible act that was a form of extreme racism: “It is important to remember where the ideas of the extreme right can lead,” he said. “I would also like to ask all communities to react with calm to this cowardly crime.” Antwerp is a stronghold for the far right, which took a third of the vote in local elections in 2000.
