EU calendar for Romania, Bulgaria still unclear


A decision on Bulgaria and Romania’s entry into the EU may be postponed until this autumn.

Enlargement Commissioner Ollie Rehn is due to release a report on the two candidates next week.

A lack of progress in key areas has left uncertainty as to what recommendation it will make, if any.

Sofia and Bucharest’s target date has been the first of January next year.

Both could see that delayed until 2008.

Or they might be admitted one at a time.

Corruption and crime are the key obstacles.

Experts say endemic corruption – affecting public services, courts, government projects and business – acts as a brake on democratic and economic development.
