There has been a breakthrough in talks aimed at ending the conflict in Darfur with the largest rebel group agreeing to sign a peace deal. A faction of the Sudan Liberation Army said it would put its name to the settlement drafted by African Union mediators. However earlier two smaller groups rejected it, casting doubt on how workable the agreement will be. Three deadlines for a deal have passed since Sunday despite intensive international efforts to end a war that has killed tens of thousands of people.
