Moussaoui defiant to the last

A super-maximum security prison in Colorado dubbed “the Alcatraz of the Rockies” is thought to be where Zacarias Moussaoui will spend the rest of his life. “You will die with a whimper” the judge said as she formally sentenced the al-Qaeda plotter after a jury spared him the death penalty. “God curse America,” he shouted in court. “God save Osama bin Laden. You’ll never get him.”

Some of the relatives of those killed on September 11 beg to differ. “I actually have a lot of faith in our military and I do believe that one day our military will capture bin Laden,” said one family member, speaking outside the court. The only person convicted in the US for his role in 9/11, the Frenchman of Moroccan origin admitted conspiracy.

In Paris, his mother slammed the sentence and her son’s treatment by the American justice system. “If he had done something, I would say he deserves it, that would be normal, he would have to pay,” she said. “But this is not the case. He did nothing. They proved nothing. Yet we needed a scapegoat. Aicha el-Wafi also had harsh words for the French.

“I would have liked France to say that he shoud be judged on facts, for what he did, not for what he said. And not because he is Arab. But my understanding is that the opposite actually happened.” With Moussaoui jailed for life with no chance of parole, his mother’s lawyer has asked France to help secure the 37-year-old’s repatriation – so he can serve that sentence in a French prison.
