German hostages freed in Iraq

The German Foreign Ministry has announced the safe release of two German hostages held in Iraq.

Engineers Thomas Nitzschke and Rene Braeunlich were kidnapped in January while working on a water project north of Baghdad. Since their abduction, four videos of the hostages had been shown in which their captors made various demands including the release of all prisoners held by US forces. The pair were last seen in a video released at the end of March when they looked haggard and said they were at the end of their tether.
