A who’s who of international royalty has joined the people of Sweden to wish a happy 60th birthday to the nation’s popular king. Stockholm has been revelling in an all-day party, with crowds turning out in force to celebrate with King Carl XV1 Gustaf and his family. And when the monarch greeted them, the reaction was overwhelming, with thunderous applause. It was a sign of appreciation for a man who has reigned in the country since 1973. Swedes took Carl Gustaf to their hearts when, as a baby, he lost his father, the then Crown Prince, in a plane crash. The monarch shared today’s festivities with Queen Silvia, who he met when she was working as an official hostess and interpreter at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Among their guests were the Spanish King and Queen, and Prince Albert of Monaco. And more festivities are in the offing. In June, the Swedish royal couple will celebrate 30-years of marriage.
