Italy's Berlusconi to resign

Silvio Berlusconi’s office has confirmed that he plans to resign on Tuesday. Over the past two weeks, the Italian prime minister has continued to dispute the election result and refused to concede defeat.

But, speaking to reporters outside the headquarters of his party, he told them that he would hold his regular cabinet meeting and then go to see President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi – a coded way of saying he would step down. The billionaire businessman is expected to stay on as the head of Forza Italia and there is speculation that he will work to have a close ally named as president.
