as speaker of the senate have turned into farce after a vote was vetoed – because three senators got the candidate’s first name wrong.

Franco Marini had apparently secured an absolute majority against 87 year old former prime minister Guilio Andreotto at the second attempt. However the opposition contested the result because three senators had written down Francesco instead of Franco. A revote is now to taking place. Prime Minister in waiting Romano Prodi has made steady progress in building a coalition and could be ready to form his government in a matter of days rather than weeks. Barring a major upset, Prodi’s favoured candidate Fausto Bertinotti will be chosen as speaker of the lower house tomorrow. Outgoing prime minister Silvio Berlusconi is continuing to challenge his rival every step of the way – but his incessant blocking tactics have lead some observers to brand him yesterdays man.
