80 years old today: congratulations are arriving from around the world for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on her birthday. The world has seen many changes since she was born in 1926. After serving as an army driver in the second world war, Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey in 1953 following the death of her father George VI.Throughout her 53-year-long reign she has been held in respect not just by her own subjects but by people all over the world. The royal family’s main home is at Windsor Castle near London where well-wishers gathered. School teachers have encouraged children to send birthday wishes to the Queen. If she reigns for another nine years she will beat Queen Victoria’s record to become the longest-reigning British monarch in history.
