Belgrade on high flood alert

world news

| |

Flooding that has struck many parts of central Europe continues to cause misery, with new alerts in Belgrade. People are racing to put sandbags and dirt barriers along the rivers Danube and Sava. Water levels have been rising way above normal and the critical period is expected to be on Thursday. The last time the rivers posed such a risk was in 1981.

Weeks of flooding caused by melting snow and heavy rain have caused tributaries running into the Danube to swell, raising water levels downstream in Serbia. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for evacuation if the waters rise any further.
