Early results reveal the leader of the centre-left coalition Romano Prodi is leading Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the race to govern Italy. Two exit polls predict Prodi’s alliance will win between 50 and 54 percent of the vote in lower house, giving him majority there.

However, results for the Senate could be very close according to projections based on partial results. A sample of 15 percent of the vote showed the centre-left won 50.4 percent of ballots cast against 48.6 percent for Berlusconi’s centre-right.
