German hostages in Iraq make plea in new footage

Two Germans held hostage in Iraq have appeared in a video posted on the internet. Rene Braeunlich and Thomas Nitzschke were abducted on January 24, in Baiji, north of Baghdad. Their abductors called themselves the Brigade of Supporters of the Sunna and Tawhid.

In the new video, dated March 28, Nitzschke says “We’re at our wits’ end. Please help us.” A written statement posted with the footage said “This is the last ultimatum for the two German agents.” It is the first sign of the pair since January 31 when militants set a 72-hour deadline for various demands, including the closure of Germany’s embassy in Iraq, threatening to kill the Germans.
