A former senior member of Sinn Fein, the political ally of the IRA, has been found dead from gunshot wounds. Denis Donaldson had admitted being a British intelligence informer. Donaldson’s body was discovered at the remote cottage in the Irish Republicwhere he had been living since December. The former mole, who left Belfast after his revelation, had no police protection. Donaldson had been Sinn Fein’s head of administration at the Stormont Assemblybefore his arrest in 2002 for alleged spying. Ian Paisley of the Democratic Ulster Unionist Party said it was a political murder. But Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams distanced his party from the shooting. Donaldson’s death comes at a crucial time for the peace process.
