The new Palestinian Foreign Minister, leading Hamas figure Mahmoud al-Zahar, has reportedly made an important conciliatory gesture in a letter to the UN. Diplomats are quoted as saying the letter hints at a desire for a “two-state solution” for the Middle East.

The development comes only days after the Islamic militant group took control of the Palestinian Authority after winning parliamentary elections. Zahar’s letter to Kofi Annan is said to refer to the Palestinians’ hope to live in “peace and security, side by side with our neighbours in this sacred part of the world”.
