It has emerged the Bahraini cruise boat which capsized killing 57 people last week was not licensed to sail.
Authorities say its owners had applied for one but never completed the procedures.
That means it was registered as a fishing boat and had permission only for use as a floating restaurant.
Officials believe 136 people were on board. Most of the victims were foreigners from sixteen countries including Britain, India and South Africa while 69 others survived.
The twin-decked vessel went down late last Thursday off the coast of Bahrain.
Police say it is too early to determine the cause of the disaster, however the boat’s captain is now being questioned by local prosecutors, who have suggested he was not qualified to be in charge.
They are also investigating claims that it was overcrowded
