Tough coalition talks ahead for Olmert


A day after a narrow victory in Israel’s parliamentary election, the question facing acting prime minister Ehud Olmert is who will he join forces with to govern Israel.

His ruling Kadima party fared worse than expected, which means tough talks lie ahead to decide on possible coalition partners, including parties opposed to an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank. An outlook confirmed by Kadima member and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres: “Kadima didn’t get enough strength to lead it alone, and we shall have to to into a coalition.”
