There are conflicting accounts surrounding the death of up to 20 people at a Shi’ite mosque in Baghdad. Iraqi police say the victims were Mehdi Army militia of radical Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr who clashed with American troops. But US authorities claim Iraqi special forces, with US advisers, led a raid on a building that was not a mosque in roughly the same area.
The Iraqi Prime Minister is said to be “deeply concerned” and has called for a full inquiry. The violence came after Iraqi troops found 30 bodies, many of them beheaded, in a village street northeast of Baghdad. Earlier on Sunday, US forces reportedly freed 17 foreigners from a secret bunker jail complex in the capital and arrested 41 Interior Ministry officials standing guard. It is not clear who the foreigners are but the Iraqi government is currently engaged in a crackdown on Sunni fighters from abroad.
