French PM meets unions over job law dispute

world news

| |

There is a fresh attempt to try to find a solution to the unrest in France over a youth employment law. Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin will hold his first direct talks with union leaders later today. However, ahead of the meeting, the unions repeated their demand that he dump the controversial legislation. The law would make it easier to hire young people but also easy to fire them.

Clashes between riot police and demonstrators have continued. Protest organisers say often their rallies have been hijacked by extremists intent on causing trouble. Yesterday saw the worst violence in two months of largely peaceful protests.
