A hostage drama in Brussels in which a man was holding a two-year-old girl in a hotel room has ended without violence. The child, who is reported to be his granddaughter, is said not to have been harmed. Little information has been given about the circumstances of the hostage-taking or the motivation behind it, but it is understood the man in his fifties is a foreign national. He has been in Belgium for the past 2-3 days and he spoke to hotel staff in English. He had taken a room on the 17th floor of the Tulipp Inn in the city centre and police officials said he claimed to have an explosive device. Police evacuated the hotel and set up a cordon around it as a precaution.
