Officials have tried to stop them with new legislation, but Spain’s mass drinking sessions known as “botellones” or “big bottle” refuse to lose their fizz. Last night in Granada, authorities tried to adopt a more liberal approach by creating a specially designated area. There have been similar scenes in as many as 20 cities across the country. In Madrid, police said they would stop people from congregating and anyone found carrying alcohol would be fined 300 euros.
