Arrests in Spain after youth drink

world news

| |

It is the day after the night before across Spain where young took part in mass drinking parties in around 20 cities. Officials tried to stop them with new legislation against the growing trend of the “botellon” or “big bottle”. Some revellers have more to regret than hangovers with reports that dozens of youths were arrested after confrontations with the police. In Granada, authorities tried to adopt a more liberal approach by creating a specially designated area. In Madrid, police said they would stop people from congregating and anyone found carrying alcohol would be fined 300 euros. Leading newspaper El Pais appealed to authorities not to over-dramatise things. The Spanish government regards excessive drinking among young people as a serious social problem.
