The two French nationals and a South Korean were among nine foreigners kidnapped in a wave of violence yesterday. Six were released soon after being snatched. The gunmen took them prisoner in response to an Israeli raid on a jail in the West Bank.

Both Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine have again promised retaliation against the operation – with strikes and protests planned.
