UK to withdraw some troops from Iraq soon

The British government is to cut the number of troops it has in Iraq by 10% and Defence Minister John Reid said that it could start handing over security responsibility for some Iraqi provinces to local forces within weeks. Reid told the UK parliament: “This reflects the completion of some of our security sector reform tasks in developing the capability of the Iraqi forces, for instance in training the trainers, and in training those involved in the guarding of their own institutions.” Eight hundred of the 8,000 British troops in southern Iraq will leave by May. The defence minister insisted that the reduction was being made because Iraqi forces are becoming much more capable of handling security and that it was being done for operational rather than political reasons.
