Promising to bring more prosperity to her country Michele Bachelet has been sworn in as Chile’s first woman president. The leftist leader was given a rapturous welcome by thousands of supporters after her inauguration, which was attended by more than two dozen heads of state.

Bachelet is the fourth consecutive president from the centre-left coalition that has ruled Chile since 1990 when democracy was restored after the Pinochet dictatorship Her election has re-enforced Latin America’s shift to the left in recent years. But Chile is a market-friendly ally of the US and Bachelet is not expected to change the policies of her predecessors.
