A sober and dignified prelude to the commemoration in the European parliament today for the second anniversary of the Madrid train bombings. Tonight there will be a concert in Madrid. Tomorrow, ceremonies in remembrance of the terrible events in March 2004 will be held in the Spanish capital.

The parliament in Brussels also remembered the victims of the terrorist attacks in London last July, with a minute’s silence observed by the invited audience of students from Madrid, London, and Brussels. The music was supplied by a European school string orchestra, and a film depicting the events in London was shown before pupils from British and Belgian schools spoke on the topic of terrorism. Representatives from all the parliament’s major parties also gave speeches.
