French hostage crisis ends

An agonising few hours for hostages in France have ended. The gunman holding them at a school has freed them and given himself up. He had taken around twenty people captive, most of them pupils. The 33-year-old is a former supply teacher at the establishment in Sablé-sur-Sarthe in the west of the country. It is understood he was depressed at losing his job and wanted to draw attention to his situation.

During the crisis he demanded to see François Fillon, the former minister of education and ex-mayor of Sablé. There is specuation he might have held Fillon partly responsible for his predicament because of the former government’s reforms.
