At least three people have been killed and around 14 injured in a blast in eastern Turkey. It happened in the city of Van near the office of the local governor. An unconfirmed report suggested it could have been caused by a suicide bomber.

Tensions run high in the region, where Turkish forces are battling Kurdish guerrillas who want an independent state. Things have not been helped by a crisis between the military and civilian authorities. A prosecutor in Van has accused a senior general of setting up an illegal group to foment unrest in the area and harm Ankara’s bid to join the EU. Some elements in Turkey’s powerful army are worried that membership would involve making too many concessions to the Kurdish minority.
