The announcement of the Best Film Oscar stunned everyone. Crash won and not Brokeback Mountain. The film, which also won Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing, is about racial tension and fear in LA told through varying car incidents.

Brokeback Mountain also ended the night with three Oscars. Taiwan’s Ang Lee won for Best Director, and the film also won the Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film is a gay romance. Philip Seymour Hoffman won for his portrayal of the writer Truman Capote. It was a rare Oscar win for an overtly gay role. Reese Witherspoon won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of country singer June Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. Among other winners were George Clooney for Best Supporting actor, Rachel Weisz for Best Supporting Actress, and Wallace and Gromit for Best Animated film.
