Uranium enrichment resumes in Iran

Tehran has confirmed it has resumed work on uranium enrichment. Iran’s parliament voted in November that it would resume the process if it was reported to the UN Security Council over its nuclear programme – that happened earlier this month. Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad maintains his country wants to develop nuclear power for electricity, not bombs.

The US and the European Union are among those concerned that the process could be used to build atomic weapons. The West is also anxious about recent statements from the president, including his view that Israel, in his words, should be “wiped off the map”.
