Jordan's king urges peaceful protest

The cartoons and the reaction to them were discussed by US President George Bush and King Abdullah of Jordan, who is visiting Washington.

King Abdullah condemned the caricatures but said protests should be conducted peacefully: “Anything that vilifies the Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him, or attacks Muslim sensibilities, I believe, needs to be condemned, but at the same time those that want to protest should do it thoughtfully, articulately and express their views peacefully.” The EU’s foreign policy chief Javier Solana has announced he is to visit a number of Muslim countries next week in a bid to calm the situation. He said: “We must find not only a way of living together but to think of the future in a compatible and coordinated manner. The world is difficult, there is a lot at stake.”
