Smiling but with no comment to make, a 31 year old Moroccan student has been freed from prison in Hamburg despite being convicted of belonging to the same terrorist cell as three of the September the 11th hi-jackers. 31 year old Mounir El Motassedeq was convicted last August. He has been freed pending the outcome of appeals into his conviction, but could be sent back to prison if they are upheld. In the meanwhile, his conviction still stands. Motassadeq, was originally found guilty of helping the hi-jackers when they were based in Hamburg. But that conviction was overturned and a retrial ordered. Now, a federal court has agreed it was wrong to jail him while the results of appeals into the final conviction are pending. Motassadeq admits he was close to the hi-jackers, but claims he knew nothing of their plans.
