Protests in Jerusalem after West Bank eviction

world news

| |

Tens of thousands of Israelis gathered in central Jerusalem to call for the resignation of interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. They are angry at what they say was an exaggerated use of force by the security services during the evacuation and demolition of nine illegal dwellings in the West Bank outpost of Amona last week.

In addition to calling for Olmert’s resignation, there were calls for a special inquiry to be set up to investigate police behaviour during the incident. More than 200 people were injured during the clashes last week, in violent scenes reminiscent of the Israeli pullout from Gaza five months ago. Ehud Olmert has targeted 24 unauthorised outposts for removal. Israel is committed to the policy under the terms of the US sponsored “road map” for peace.
