Angry Fatah activists burn cars in Gaza

Violence has erupted in Gaza City where angry Fatah militants have set fire to vehicles in protest at their party’s defeat against Hamas. The militant group won a landslide victory in this week’s Palestinian legislative election which means it now has the power to shape the next government.

The vote has deepened divisions within the Palestinian people. While it is a time of celebration for Hamas supporters, thousands of Fatah militants have taken to the streets to protest against the militant group’s victory. Fatah strongman Mohammed Dahlan was seen in the crowd outside the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza City shaking hands with the activists and addressing the crowd. Officials leading the rally demanded the resignation of Fatah’s top leaders without mentioning president Mahmoud Abbas by name.
