The funeral procession in honour of Kosovan president Ibrahim Rugova has been winding its way through the streets of Pristina. Up to a million people are expected for the ceremony. Kosovan police are backed up by the 17,000 strong Nato peace force in the province.
Delegations from 40 countries are in Kosovo to pay their final respects to Rugova, who died from lung cancer last Saturday at the age of 61.
He passed away as talks with the government of Serbia-Montenegro are due to begin on possible Kosovan independence. The Serbian president has criticised the Kosovan authorities’ decision to bar him from attending the funeral, saying they had missed a chance to improve relations.
