The centre-right former Prime Minister Anibal Cavaco Silva has been elected as president of Portugal, according to reports on several of the country’stelevision stations.

All three major channels cite Cavaco Silva as having polled more than fifty percent of the vote. 69 year old Manuel Alegre, formerly of the Socialist Party but standing as an independent, is said to be in second place. The former president and two-times prime minister Mario Soares is in third.
