Political stand-off over Iran continues

Top level talks are taking place to discuss Iran’s controversial nuclear activities. The EU’s Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana says he is confident that Russia and China will back EU and US calls for Iran to be referred to the UN Security Council over its nuclear programme.

UK Foreign Minister Jack Straw earlier said it was up to Iran to reassure the world that its activities are of peaceful intent; “The onus is on Iran to act to give the international community confidence that its nuclear programme has exclusively peaceful purposes. Confidence that is, I’m afraid, sorely undermined by its history of concealment and deception.” Western politicians are thought to believe Russia can be persuaded to back a tough stance against Iran.

President Vladimir Putin says compromise is still possible; “In any case, on the Iranian nuclear issue, we need to work very carefully and without taking any abrupt, erroneous steps.” Iran says it will not be intimidated by international pressure and has warned repeatedly of increases in oil prices as a result of the situation.
