Questions are being asked in Russia after nine people died in a fire at an office block. Many were killed as they jumped in a bid to escape the flames in the Pacific port city of Vladivostok. In horrific scenes, victims hung from windows and then leapt for their lives. Some survived. Others were not so lucky. It later emerged many inside had no other way out, with reports that fire exits were barred.“There were two young women hanging up there,” said a firefighter. “We had time to take one down but the other one did not wait long enough. If only she could have held out two minutes more. But there were different things, like wood on fire falling down, and she couldn’t hold on.”
The inferno also left left 17 people injured. The cause is not known but it is thought a cigarette or a short circuit may have been responsible.
