Moscow is advising caution over the Iran nuclear issue.Russian president Vladimir Putin was careful not to be to specific when he received Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Kremlin. “Russia, Germany, its partners and the United States have a very close position on the Iran question” Putin said. “In any case in the context of the Iranian nuclear problem, great prudence is needed, without any sudden or misguided steps”.
European Union countries have ben hoping for a common approach with the Russians against Teheran. However both Germany and Russia have significant economic interests in Iran. Correspondents say commercial interests would be jeopardised if international sanctions were introduced.
Merkel stressed other subjects discussed at the meeting:“We have been talking about energy politics” Merkel said. “Especially about the Baltic pipeline. Thankfully this project threatens no-one”.
Her predecessor Gerhard Schroder had a strong personal friendship with the Russian leader. The Chancellor’s visit to Moscow was an opportunity to develop a new understanding between Berlin and Moscow.
