The bird flu virus appears to have claimed another human victim in eastern Turkey. It is reported a 12-year-old girl has died from the disease – and that she came from the same region as three other youngsters who passed away after contracting the virus earlier this month.
Her five year old brother also has flu-like symptoms, Towns in the east and south of Turkey are now on high alert for the most deadly strain of bird flu, referred to as H5N1.
Doctors in Van say parents are now bringing in children as soon as they suspect infection, making the disease easier to treat.
A major cull of wild and domesticated birds is underway, with Ankara now under pressure to compensate farmers for the loss of their animals.
The poultry industry is worth about 3 billion euros a year to the Turkish economy.
