The first human case of suspected bird flu has appeared in western Europe. It is reported the person being treated is a male journalist living in Belgium. Special tests are now being carried out at the Saint Pierre hospital in Brussels, where doctors are taking every precaution to contain any infection. He was checked into hospital last night with flu-like symptoms. It is believed the man is of Turkish origin and had recently returned from a bird flu infected area of Turkey. The country has been trying to contain an outbreak in the east for the past two weeks. Three children have died from the most deadly strain of the disease and 15 others have been infected. Thousands of wild birds and poultry have been culled in an effort to contain the virus, which can be transferred between birds and people, but so far has not passed from human to human.
