Spanish police are continuing a nationwide anti-terrorist operation. At least 17 people have been arrested. They are suspected of recruiting Muslim radicals to carry out attacks in Iraq.
People have been detained in Madrid, in two locations in the region of Catalonia and also in the Basque country.
Most of those seized are reported to be Moroccans. Among them are said to be the Imam of a mosque and a suspect who may have connections with militants behind a notorious attack on an Italian target in Iraq.
The strike on the military base at Nassiriya in November 2003 killed 18 Italians and nine Iraqis.
The arrests come a month after 16 people were detained in Spain on suspicion of recruiting insurgents or suicide bombers and sending them to Iraq, Chechnya or Kashmir.
