Ariel Sharon underwent another brain scan this morning as doctors closely monitor his condition.
A fresh update from the medical team at Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem is due this evening.
The Israeli prime minister has now undergone three operations and is in a medically-induced coma following a massive stroke on Wednesday.
Many observers fear the worst and for the press this is a waiting game as doctors continue to check what damage Sharon has sustained and whether there is any chance of him recovering.
Sharon had already suffered a minor stroke last month but was back at work within days.
His deputy, Ehud Olmert, has taken over as caretaker leader.
Sharon’s illness comes as Israel prepares for an election which he had been widely tipped to win, and the latest polls suggest his Kadima party could still take control.
But for the moment all eyes are on the medical centre, with Sharon’s sons joining the bedside vigil.
