Dozens of people have been killed in an attack in the Shi’ite holy city of Kerbala in Iraq. The blast was apparently caused by a suicide bomber. A security source said he detonated his belt a few metres from the entrance of the mausoleum of Imam Hussein. Many worshippers and street traders are said to be among the victims. The violence has brought back memories of the devastating blasts in March 2004, when co-ordinated suicide bombings during an annual religious festival killed more than 90 people. That atrocity was blamed on al-Qaeda’s branch in Iraq. It has also been a bloody day in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, where more than 30 people have been killed in a suicide attack. The target was a group of police officers and army recruits. At least thirty others have been injured.
