Diplomatic efforts to rescue French hostage held in Iraq

The French government says it is doing its best to find an engineer kidnapped in Iraq.

A video thought to show images of 52-year-old Bernard Planche from Lyon being held at gunpoint has been screened on the Arabic-language channel al-Arabiya. A little-known militant group, “Surveillance for the sake of the Iraq Brigade”,says it will execute him unless France ends its “illegitimate presence” in the country. Planche worked for an NGO, or non-governmental organisation, at a water treatment plant in Baghdad. He was seized by gunmen at his home in the city at the start of the month. France has no troops in Iraq and is not taking part in any police training. There are around 90 French nationals in the country. The French Foreign Ministry has called for Planche to be released, and has confirmed that French security services are helping search for him.
