Sri Lanka remembers victims with silence

Mourners across the world have gathered to remember the thousands who died in last year’s Asian tsunami, a year on from one of the world’s worst disasters.

The huge tidal wave claimed around 230,000 lives across 13 countries. Almost two million others were made homeless. In Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapakse led the country’s memorial ceremony which began with two minutes of silence to mark the moment the tsunami hit. More than 31,000 people died here – the second highest number of lives claimed by the tsunami.
