US President George W. Bush has taken responsibility for the false intelligence that led to the war in Iraq.
He said mistakes were made in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. His administration cited Iraq’s supposed weapons of mass destruction as justification. Such weapons were never found.
“When we made the decision to go into Iraq, many intelligence agencies around the world judged that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction. This judgement was shored by the intelligence agencies of governments that did not support my decision to remove Saddam. And it is true that much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong. As President, I am responsible for the decision to go into Iraq. And I am also responsible for fixing what went wrong by reforming our intelligence capabilities and we are doing just that.
Bush went on to say overthrowing Saddam Hussein was the right thing to do.
The President is facing low popularity ratings and waning American public support for the war.
A smooth election in Iraq would help him build a sense of progress.
But increasingly critics are asking when US troops will be brought home.
