A vote taking place in Russia is seen as a test of the political landscape ahead of parliamentary elections in 2007 and presidential polls in 2008.Moscow is voting for members of the city council.

Opinion polls suggest there will be a victory for a list of candidates put together by the ruling party, United Russia, but observers are keen to see what kind of impact the liberal opposition can make. A nationalist party has been banned from taking part in the polls because of a campaign advertisement that judges said incited racism.
